Answers to frequently asked acupuncture questions
I don't like needles/ I am sensitive.
It's important to mention that most people find that the needles are so small (hair thin) and nothing like what they consider to be a scary needle. The insertions are also gentle and not painful. The most common response is, "that didn't hurt at all!" Even kids like acupuncture.
Are the needles re-used?
All acupuncture needles used are sterile and disposable. They are only used once. Once used they are placed in a biohazard medical sharps container.
Does acupuncture hurt?
Needle insertion is gentle, and generally pain free. Once inserted, there may be a “sensation” at times like a dull or heavy ache. This is called the “qi sensation” (pronounced Chi). Alternately, qi sensation can also be so subtle as to barely be felt.
How many acupuncture treatments will I need?
Everyone and every situation is unique. Remember, holistic treatments are a therapy, and not a drug. It may take several or many treatments, depending on the duration and severity of what we are working with. Many people notice a shift after the first session, but it can take longer to anchor that change into the body, especially if there are chronic feelings of being un-well. Phases of treatment can be delineated by Acute, Corrective, and Wellness. We may also look at diet and lifestyle factors which may be interfering in wellbeing. Chinese herbal medicine is also an option to help with treatment.
Please wear comfortable loose fitting clothing to your acupuncture appointment and make sure you have eaten beforehand.
